The New York Post reported on Friday (5/7/2024) that the sword mysteriously vanished from the village of Rocamadour in the Pyrenees, where it had been embedded in a high rock for around 1,300 years.

The disappearance of Durandal has left authorities puzzled and has captured the attention of the public.

The tale of Roland and his sword is chronicled in the 11th-century epic poem “The Song of Roland,” currently housed in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, England.

This poem recounts how an angel bestowed the sword Durandal upon the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne, who then passed it on to Roland.

According to a report by CBS News on Thursday (4/7), the Italian epic “Orlando Enraged” suggests that the sword Durandal was once wielded by the Trojan prince, Hector.

When Roland found himself unable to destroy his beloved sword, he flung it as far as he could to prevent his enemies from seizing it.

Legend has it that the sword landed in a village in southern France, becoming lodged in a stone wall approximately 10 meters above the ground.

The sword had been in that location for centuries, becoming a popular tourist attraction for the city. However, after 1,300 years, the sword has disappeared, believed to have been stolen.

The town, famous for its goat cheese, mourns the loss. Dominique Lenfant, the mayor of Rocamadour, expressed.

“We will miss Durandal. This sword has been a part of Rocamadour for centuries, and every tourist guide showcases it during visits.” Lenfant added.

“Rocamadour feels like it has lost a piece of itself. Despite being a legend, the destiny of our village and this sword are intertwined.”
