Mount Semeru Status Raises Level IV to ‘Warning Level’

Indonesia, MRN – Mount Semeru continues to display heightened volcanic activity, as evidenced by the eruption of the Volcano’s Pyroclastic Flow (APG) and other indicators on Sunday (4/12).

The APG originates from accumulations of material at the top of the lava flows, located approximately 800 meters from the summit (Jonggring Seloko Crater).

In addition to the potential for volcanic ash, the power of lava flow remains high due to the increased precipitation on Mount Semeru.

In response to this heightened volcanic activity, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has raised the status of Mount Semeru from ‘Advisory’ to ‘Warning’, or from Level III to Level IV, as of 12.00 WIB today.

Based on the recent status update, PVMBG advises the community to cease activities in the southeastern sector near Besuk Kobokan, up to a distance of 13 km from the eruption center.

Beyond this area, it is recommended that activities be halted at least 500 meters away from the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan due to potential impact from volcanic ash and lava flows extending up to 17 km from the epicenter.

Following field observations conducted by the PVMBG team and the Lumajang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), it has been confirmed that the APG slide has reached a distance of 19 kilometers, even crossing the Gladak Perak Bridge, as reported by Joko Sambang, Head of Emergency BPBD Lumajang Regency.
